Rhode Island Red Book

Rhode Island Red Book

"I have been interested in poultry since I first knew the word but the year two thousand marks my seventy-fourth year in poultry. All that time was with Rhode Island Reds."

Rhode Island Red book
These are the words of the Doyen of the Rhode Island Red in Australia, Colin Gregor. Colin spent the equivalent of an average lifespan breeding the Rhode Island Red Fowl and Bantam. Throughout the years he achieved outstanding success in the show pen while carrying on his life as a farmer, market gardener and nursing his wife in their twilight years. It takes a special man to accomplish all this and that is what makes a Doyen of Poultry.

The Rhode Island Red is a popular breed in all Australian States, in fact, it is popular in almost every country where pure breeds of poultry are raised. Generally any red coloured fowl or bantam at a country sale or on a piece of linen or place mat is called a "Rhode Island Red". The breed is so strongly associated with red plumed fowls that even exhibition breeders and showmen sometimes forget that there is a specific shape, called 'type', that makes a breed a Rhode Island Red. In fact, red feathers are an attractive adornment rather than a definition.

In his book Colin Gregor sets about instructing the novice and experienced breeder and exhibitor about the correct requirements for shape and colour that makes up the Rhode Island Red. He leaves no stone unturned in this book of appreciation and instruction into the finer points of the breed. Every reader will learn something from this detailed work. He clearly and repeatedly attributes the 'lustre' of the feather as a major attraction of the breed. A facet that no breeder or exhibitor can afford to ignore.
