The Yorke Peninsula Division of General Practice was established in 1993 with the aim of representing the needs of the region's general practitioners and their communities. The division operates five days per week and has
ten staff with a FTE of 6.0 and a committed Medical Director who consults
locally, as well as working on divisional activities.
The Division assists GP's and their staff
with a range of health related issues and is a focal point for the dissemination of information. As part of our
new Agreement plan, we are now working in nine areas. These include:
Governance, Prevention and Early Intervention, Access, Integration, Manage
Chronic Disease, General Practice Support, Quality Support, Consumer Focus and
Workforce Support. We will continue with a focus on mental health, immunisation, diabetes, asthma and health
planning.
The implementation of this new plan over the next 3 years will continue to impact positively on the cost effectiveness of our health service through the
on-going integration and reduction of duplicated services. In
2000, The Yorke Peninsula Division of General Practice
was successful in
applying for funding from Department of Health and Ageing for More Allied
Health Services (MAHS). The services delivered by this program continue to
evolve as GPs have
identified inequity in health services in rural areas. The initial focus was on Diabetes
and Asthma targeted due to the lack of
permanently based allied health services; this focus has now expanded to include
mental health services . This funding is being used to provide
practice based Enhanced Primary Care Nurses (working in the area of Diabetes),
Asthma Education and Counselling.
The Nurse s, Counsellor
and the Asthma Educator - all practice based, support rural GPs
in their role as primary health care providers and establish access to allied
health services that were not previously available. Relationships
have been
strengthened and as such, this collaborative approach to health care
has improved health outcomes for the Yorke Peninsula community.
